2 people dead after crashing into back of semi-truck in west Phoenix

Police say a man was speeding and slammed into the back of a semi-truck, killing himself and his passenger on a west Phoenix road during rush hour on Tuesday morning.

Police said 28-year-old Aaron Soto was driving too fast while heading northwest on Grand Avenue when he hit the back of a semi-truck making a left onto 33rd Avenue from southeast Grand Avenue just after 7 a.m.

Soto and his passenger, 28-year-old Angel Loera, died at the scene.

The semi-truck driver was taken to a hospital with minor injuries and was not impaired, police said.

The area was shut down for hours as detectives investigated. Around 2:30 p.m., Grand Avenue reopened in both directions between 31st and 33rd avenues.
