Cameron Powell: 36-year-old man killed after falling 60-70 feet in industrial accident

A construction contract worker has died in a Thursday morning industrial accident after falling 60-70 feet at a Jefferson County plant.

Capt. Crystal Holmes with the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office identifies the victim as 36-year-old Cameron Powell of Vidor.

Deputies and other first responders rushed to the Beaumont Clean Ammonia plant inside the old Beaumont Works terminal off Twin City Highway, just outside the Beaumont city limits.

It was reported as a traumatic injury after a man had fallen in a tank.

Cameron Powell fell 60-70 feet while working inside a tank at the OCI plant.

The man was taken by ambulance to CHRISTUS St. Elizabeth Hospital where he died at about 9:30 a.m., according to Judge Chesson.

Woodside Energy sent a statement late Thursday with a response to the fatal industrial accident:

An incident occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. CDT Thursday at the Beaumont Clean Ammonia site in Texas which has tragically resulted in the death of an employee of one of OCI’s construction contractors.

The Beaumont Clean Ammonia site is owned by Woodside Energy and construction is managed by OCI.

The incident occurred during work activity being carried out at the site. All other people at the site are safe and accounted for.

Woodside CEO Meg O’Neill said, “This is a very sad day, and I offer my deepest sympathy to our colleague’s family, friends and workmates.

“The safety of our workforce is always our top priority, and we are providing full support to OCI and its contracting company.

“We are taking steps to understand the circumstances around this tragic event and are working closely with relevant authorities and regulators, OCI and the contractor company. A full investigation will be initiated and a stand down of all work is currently in place.”
