A McDonald’s employee, Dionna Nyshia, was fatally shot Monday evening in East St. Louis.
The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. at the McDonald’s located at 588 N. 24th St., according to Illinois State Police. Local officers responded to the scene after reports of gunfire.
Authorities found the victim, identified by friends and family as Dionna Nyshia, with multiple gunshot wounds.
She was rushed to a nearby hospital but was later pronounced dead.
East St. Louis City Councilman Ryan Cason shared details about the shooting, stating, “The shooters may have come through the drive-thru and started shooting. We don’t believe the woman was the intended target.”
A sign taped to the door Tuesday said the business was closed. Two bullet holes were visible in a wall and a drive-thru window was boarded up.
“I’ve been told by the police chief that this case is his number one priority,” Cason said.
Statement from restaurant owner
In a statement, the restaurant’s owner expressed sorrow over the loss. “The victim was a beloved member of our McDonald’s family, and we are heartbroken over this tragic loss to senseless gun violence,” the statement read.
Counseling services have been made available to coworkers who are grieving the loss.
