This is a list of Canadian cities that have been incorporated, organized by province or territory and listed alphabetically. For each province, more detailed lists of communities are provided.

Capital Cities

Alberta

In Alberta, a city must have a population of 10,000 or more and the bulk of its structures must be situated on plots of land that are no larger than 1,850 square meters (19,900 sq ft). Even if a town satisfies these qualifications, it may not necessarily be incorporated as a city. Although recognized as hamlets that are comparable to cities, the urban service areas of Fort McMurray and Sherwood Park do not have incorporation. Ten towns that are now established as towns but are also eligible for city status.

19 cities make up Alberta. The newest city in Alberta is Beaumont, which became a city on January 1, 2019, after gaining town status.

British Columbia

If a town has more than 5,000 residents, it can be incorporated as a city in British Columbia. A city that has been properly incorporated has its status even if its population later drops; for instance, the once-larger City of Greenwood currently only has 665 residents.

There are 53 cities in British Columbia.

Manitoba

Once a community in Manitoba has 7,500 residents, it may apply for city status. The newest city in Manitoba is Morden, which became a city on August 24, 2012, after converting from a town.

New Brunswick has eight cities.

Newfoundland and Labrador has three cities.

Northwest Territories

The capital of the Northwest Territories, Yellowknife, is the only incorporated city, just like in the other two Canadian provinces.

Nova Scotia

Since they were combined into regional municipalities in the 1990s, there are no longer any incorporated cities in Nova Scotia.

Nunavut

Iqaluit, the territory’s capital, is the only incorporated city, just like in the other two Canadian territories.

Ontario

52 cities make up Ontario. In Ontario, the provincial government grants city status, usually at the request of the incorporated municipality. Once a municipality has more than 10,000 residents, it is eligible to petition for city status. A community that exceeds this population threshold does not automatically receive this status; instead, the municipality must apply for it, and the provincial Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing must approve it.

Not all towns that attain this demographic target have sought city status. For instance, towns are still used to describe places like Ajax, Oakville, and Whitby, which each had a population of over 100,000 in 2011. However, once a municipality has been given city status, it retains it even if its population later falls back below 10,000. (as, for example, Dryden). Richmond Hill, which was elevated from a town to a city on March 25, 2019, is the newest city in Ontario.

Prince Edward Island

Prince Edward Island has two cities.

Quebec

Although the designation exists, there are currently no cities in Quebecian provincial legislation. Even if a ville is technically a “township,” this distinction between a town and a city in English is arbitrary and subjective. Cities, townships, and municipalités are the three types of municipalities in Quebec.

Saskatchewan

In Saskatchewan, a town must have 5,000 or more residents and fulfill additional requirements before it can be incorporated as a city, though in the early 20th century, a number of locations, including Saskatoon and Regina, received city status despite having a lesser population. Even though the population of the City of Melville fell below 5,000 in the 1990s, it still has city status. When it reaches the 5,000-person mark, Kindersley plans to petition for city status. Warman, which became a city on October 24, 2012, is the newest city in Saskatchewan.

There are 16 cities in Saskatchewan.

Yukon

The Yukon’s capital, Whitehorse, is the only incorporated city, just like in the other two Canadian territories. Dawson was also formerly incorporated as a city, but due to population, its status was downgraded to that of a town in the 1980s when the criteria were modified. It is, however, formally the town of the city of Dawson according to a specific clause.
