In 2017, they commemorated 100 years. Examine the development of the School’s history over the years. In 1917, the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Alberta established the first dental program.

Through leadership in oral/maxillofacial health care, teaching, research/scholarship, and offering services that are responsive to social need, Albertans’ health and that of the world at large will be improved.

Programs & Admissions

The following programs are offered by the School of Dentistry:

Dentistry

Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS)

A four-year recognized course of study leading to the Doctor of Dental Surgery degree (DDS). Prior to enrollment to this program, you must have completed at least two years of pre-dental school. More information >

DDS Advanced Placement

Aimed towards graduates of dental programs that are not accredited, i.e., those that have not received approval from the Commission of Dental Accreditation for Canada (CDAC) or the Commission of Dental Accreditation for the United States (CODA). The DDS program’s third year will be for those whose applications are accepted. More information >

Dental Hygiene

In a dynamic, student-centered learning atmosphere, the Dental Hygiene Program offers an education that is highly responsive, scientific, and professional. An atmosphere that promotes cooperation with peers and professors is fostered via the utilization of small-group and case-based learning.

Dental General Practice Residency Program

Edmonton General Practice Residency (E-GPR)

An elective one-year postgraduate residency in general dentistry. Four positions are available per year to qualified applicants.

Applications are accepted between July 11, 2022 and September 25, 2022

The program will run from July 1, 2023, through June 30, 2024

Calgary General Practice Residency (C-GPR)

An elective one-year postgraduate residency in general dentistry. Two positions are available per year to qualified applicants.

Applications are accepted between July 11, 2022 and September 25, 2022

The program will run from July 1, 2023, through June 30, 2024

Admission Requirements

  • Must be in the final year or a graduate of a recognized dental school (Canadian, US, Australian, Ireland, or New Zealand) with a DDS or DMD or BDS Degree.
  • Must have a license to practice in Alberta, or must have passed the N.D.E.B. examination of Canada.

The University of Alberta Program has joined other Canadian Programs in the Match. Details that applicants need to know are available at https://www.natmatch.com/dentres/.

Applicants must follow the instructions of the Match Program. You will be required to submit you name and additional information.

Application Instructions:

  1. All application information including references, Letter(s) of Good Standing and Class Ranking, and the application fee MUST be received by the application deadline in order to be considered by the Admissions Committee.
  2. Application Form: To be submitted via Google Form
    • The following should be submitted as ONE PDF document to be uploaded at the end of the Application Google Form :
      • CV
      • Letter of Intent (No more than one page in length, 12 point font, Times New Roman, normal margins)
      • unofficial transcripts
  3. Letter of Good Standing and Class Ranking from the Dean (or their designate) of your Dentistry School to be submitted according to their regulations to [email protected]
  4. Three Reference Appraisals are to be submitted by your referees using the Reference Appraisal Google Form. Your will be asked to submit the names and email addresses of three references on the Application Google Form; however, you are responsible for providing the link to the Reference Appraisal Google Form to your Refereees.  We will NOT contact them to ask them to submit the reference for you. Referees should complete the Reference Appraisal Google Form and they will be given the option to upload a reference letter as well.
  5. $135 non-refundable Application fee can be paid online to the University of Alberta via the online payment website. 

Full and Complete applications must be received by September 25, 2022 for consideration by the Admissions Committee for program commencement starting July 1, 2023. Only electronic applications will be accepted.

Zoom interviews will be conducted with the short-listed applicants for the Edmonton program on November 5, 2022. Zoom interviews will be conducted with the short-listed applicants on November 3, 2022 for the Calgary GPR Program.

Program and applicant rankings are due at the Match on November 14, 2022, and the Match is released on November 21, 2022. (The rankings system is open for use from October 24, 2022 12:00 AM ET to November 14, 2022 11:59 PM ET.)

Fees

Required: 

  • Dental residents pay a tuition/registration fee with the University of Alberta (approximately $1100 for the residency year). This covers library access and instructional resources.
  • ADA+C registration (Approximately $900)
  • $10 Million Mal-Practice Insurance – CDSPI is the recommended supplier by the ADA+C (Approximately $2,000 annually).
  • Basic Healthcare Provider Level C CPR + AED Training (Approximately $75)

Optional: 

  • IV Sedation Courses (approximately $23,000)
  • Other Miscellaneous Continuing Dental Education Courses as identified by the Program Director.
